"Hey Joe" Solo - Jimi Hendrix Guitar Lesson

"Hey Joe" Solo - Jimi Hendrix

Lead Guitar

In this episode of Riffin' Through Time, we'll be taking a look at the guitar solo from "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix. This solo is fairly challenging, so breaking it down into smaller chunks is recommended. We'll start by listening to the solo at full speed, and then at a slower speed. After that, we'll get into each part of the solo so you can learn how to play it.

The solo in "Hey Joe" is almost entirely played using the minor pentatonic scale, which makes this solo pretty easy to wrap your head around. The hardest part will be replicating Jimi's sound. The key to sounding like Jimi is getting down the expressiveness in his playing. In this case, it means nailing the legato phrases and vibrato.

It may take you some time to get this solo down. To be as efficient as possible, we suggest breaking up your practice time into small, focused sessions (10-20 mins) a couple times a day for the best result. Doing this will help you learn faster, and stave off mental and physical fatigue.
