How To Tune a Guitar WITHOUT a Tuner

Guitar Lessons For Beginners

Nobody wants to play a guitar that's out of tune, and nobody wants to listen to someone play a guitar that's out of tune. It almost goes without saying: ensuring your guitar is in tune is pretty important.

So if you’ve ever been stuck with a guitar that’s out of tune with NO guitar tuner in sight, I'm going to give you a few tips and tuning methods to get your guitar properly in tune.

(Note: this lesson will cover standard tuning only)

There are a number of different ways to tune your guitar without a tuner, and I’m going to go over a few of the easiest and most common ones.

The 3 tuning methods I’ll cover in this video are:

  1. The Fifth Fret Method -- fretting each string at the fifth fret to tune the string below it (careful -- there's one exception!)
  2. The Harmonic Method -- using the harmonic on the seventh fret to tune to the harmonic on the fifth fret of the string above it
  3. The Octave Method -- using one octave up to tune each string

By the end of this video, you’ll know exactly how to tune your guitar WITHOUT using a guitar tuner. You might find it a little tricky at first, but I promise you the more you play and practice tuning your guitar using one (or all) of these methods, the quicker AND easier it'll get.
