In this guitar lesson we will be learning the rhythm parts to the song “The Memory Remains” by Metallica. In order to play this song you should be familiar with your power chords and minor pentatonic scale. There is quite a bit of bending that goes on in this song so you will want to be familiar with how to bend the strings too. The song is tuned down one half step so make sure you adjust your guitar accordingly before digging in. We have provided you with the TAB and notation for the basic parts that you will be learning.
The intro, which is same rhythm part as the chorus, is pretty straightforward. Start the intro off by playing a Db power chord, remember we are tuned down one half step, with your 1st finger on the 5th fret of the 5th string and your 3rd finger on the 7th fret of the 4th string. Slide that chord up to an Eb power chord with your 1st finger on the 7th fret of the 5th string and your 3rd finger on the 9th fret of the 4th string. Now palm mute the sixth string and play it open twice. Go back to the Eb power chord and play it tow more times to finish off this phrase. You will need to play this whole phrase three times for the intro. After the third time play an E power with your 1st finger on the 1st fret of the 6th string and your 3rd finger on the 3rd fret of the 5th string. Mute this chord right after you play it. That is the whole intro. The chorus uses this same riff with a bit of variation.
Now it is time to learn the riffs for the verses. There are three basic variations for the main riff that occurs during the verses. The first half of each variation is the same so lets learn that first. Play the 6th string open two times. Now play the 5th fret of the 5th string with your 1st finger and hammer on to the 7th fret with your 3rd finger. Go back to the 5th fret play that note and hammer on to the 7th fret again. Finish off this phrase by picking the 7th fret one more time. This is the first half of each of the following variations of the verse riff.
Play the riff that you just learned in the last paragraph. This is the first half of the first variation. To play the second half play the 5th fret of the 4th string with your first finger. Now play the 7th fret of the D string with your 3rd finger and bend that note up one whole step. Let it back down and go back to the 5th fret with your 1st finger. That completes the first variation.
The first time you hear this variation played is before the singing starts. This variation is played three times and then tagged with an ending. To play the tag, grab the 3rd fret of the 6th string with your 1st finger, 5th fret of the 4th string with your 4th finger, 2nd fret of the 5th string with you 1st finger and then back to the 5th fret of the 4th string with your 4th finger. Finish off the tag by playing an Eb power chord with an open 6th string and the 2nd fret of the 5th string. At the very end of this section you need to play some harmonics by resting your finger on the 6th string just behind the third fret. Make sure not to play the harmonic located directly above the third fret.
Don’t push down all the way just lay your finger on the string and then play that string five times.
The second variation of the verse riff starts off just like the first one. Play the riff that all of the variations have in common again. Now play the 5th fret of the 4th string with your 1st finger and hammer on to the 7th fret with your 3rd finger. Bend that note on the 7th fret up a whole step and let it back down. Come back down to the 5th fret. Play the 7th fret one more time and bend that note up a whole step. That is the entire second variation.
Play the beginning part of the riff to start off the third variation. Now play the 5th fret of the 6th string with your 1st finger and the 7th fret with your 3rd finger. Finish off this variation by playing the 5th fret of the 5th string with your 1st finger. That covers all of the rhythm parts for this song.
