In this series of lessons we are going to be taking a look as some of the common elements of contemporary worship music. To get you started we will take a look at some of the more common chord shapes and chord progressions that you will see over and over again in this style of music.
One of the biggest influences on contemporary worship music is the band U2. A lot of the feel and sound of worship music has been taken from the U2 sound. Popular praise music from Hillsong and Lincoln Brewster has a nice spacious sound that really defines this genre of music.
One thing that I really want to mention about playing this style of music is that it is important to play tastefully. Playing in a really busy or flashy style can really take away from the song or be really distracting. I have played a lot of different church gigs and the one thing that keeps getting me called back is playing what is appropriate for the style and not trying to be out in front all of the time.
Work through these lessons if you currently playing or want to play in your local church band. Have fun!
